A paradigm shift (or revolutionary science) is, according to Thomas Kuhn, in his influential book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962), a change in the basic assumptions, or paradigms, within the ruling theory of science. It is in contrast to his idea of normal science. 2021-02-01 Kuhn, paradigms and sociology? In these sections, Kuhn calls paradigm "intrinsically circular" and defines it as "what the members of a scientific community share, and, conversely, a scientific community consists of men who share a paradigm" (Kuhn 175). While paradigms exist within communities, they can also be global, a characteristic Kuhn attributes to all natural sciences.

Thomas Samuel Kuhn was an American philosopher of science whose 1962 book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions was influential in both academic and popular circles, introducing the term paradigm shift, which has since become an English-language idiom. Kuhn made several claims concerning the progress of scientific knowledge: that scientific fields undergo periodic "paradigm shifts" rather than solely progressing in a linear and continuous way, and that these paradigm shifts open These shifts are what Kuhn describes as scientific revolutions—"the tradition-shattering complements to the tradition-bound activity of normal science" (6). New assumptions (paradigms/theories) require the reconstruction of prior assumptions and the reevaluation of prior facts.

Even though Kuhn restricted the use of the term to the natural sciences, the concept of a paradigm shift has also been used in numerous non-scientific

The theory is that which most think of as being the full description of a given discipline. However, as Kuhn employs it, a theory only pertains to what a disciplinary community asserts is true. Thomas Kuhn argued that science does not evolve gradually towards truth. Science has a paradigm which remains constant before going through a paradigm shift when current theories can’t explain some phenomenon, and someone proposes a new theory.
